Reviewed by: Eric Porter, November 2003 One of rock’s most respected guitarists, Jeff Beck is quite an enigma. It seems he just comes and goes as he pleases, popping up here and there to fire some tasty licks into the rock scene. Beck has played with everyone from Rod Stewart to Roger Waters, and of course was a guitar hero with The Yardbirds. The funk/fusion of Blow By Blow garnered Beck some of the highest praise of his career. Released in 1975, it contains the FM radio classic “Freeway Jam." Imagine trying to get airplay for a rock instrumental in today’s world of radio programming. Produced by the legendary George Martin, Beck also gives a tip of the hat to The Beatles with an interesting reading of "She’s A Woman” with a talk box. Beck’s playing is silky smooth on the laid back groove of “Air Blower." “Scatterbrain” is probably my favorite track; Beck just knocks off some hot leads as the band churns underneath, a lot of energy for a studio recording. The playing in “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers” can bring a guitar player to his knees, as Beck’s phrasing is just perfect. If you are a fan of that 70s fusion sound, with some great guitar, then Blow By Blow is a must have for your collection.
