Reviewed by: John "Bo Bo" Bollenberg, March 2001 As a follow-up to their album Better By Far, Caravan recorded a fistful of songs in 1977. Unfortunately these were never released. However, a while ago Pye Hastings found the much acclaimed masterpiece under inches of dust. Seventeen years after the initial idea, Pye's son Julian remastered the tape to allow us to expand our Caravan collection. Caravan wouldn't be Caravan if the album didn't fit in with the rest of their material, so expect typical British humor based on even more typical Canterbury-scene music. "Cool Water" sails beautifully on its strong melody, whilst "Just The Way You Are" is rather a fluffy kind of song. "The Crack In The Willow" is the Caravan we all like so much. A nice synth opens a typical English story about ... cricket! Laidback-funk with tongue-in-cheeck humor is at stake in "An-saphone." 100 % Caravan is "Side By Side," a nice singalong with smooth strings. The final four tracks miss the clear sound of the rest of the album. They were originally recorded with other equipment. People have tried to restore the tapes the best they could but I'm afraid these tracks are just for the diehards.
