Reviewed by: Davide Guidone, August 2003 A Murder Of Crows is the second release from Dead Soul Tribe, the band created by Devon Graves, ex-vocalist of Psychotic Waltz. This A Murder Of Crows is based on the concept that crows are used to carry the souls of dead people into the beyond. What if the crows can’t do it? This dark point of view is perfectly showed by the kind of music that spreads itself over the record. The music is a mix of metal and a little bit of prog, all in a very dark vein. In fact, on some parts of the disc I found some Porcupine Tree influences, while in the faster ones I noticed a lot of Fates Warning–like music. In some cases, I recognize some riffs that appear on A Pleasant Shade Of Gray. The guitar riffs are predominant and of course the music depends on them, almost exclusively. In some tracks Devon Graves plays flute and my mind immediately thought of Jethro Tull; in fact, Ian Anderson seems to appear on this album. However, the sound has an introspective mark and it’s perfect for listening to in those moments where one prefers to share with no one but himself! A good disc that has particular atmospheres. So if you need these kind of characteristics, go and buy it!
