Echolyn - When The Sweet Turns Sour

	Reviewed by: John "Bo Bo" Bollenberg, April 2001 A strong, positive, self-complacency has since long been apparent with the American company Echolyn, a band whose sound was very much their "own" on on the independent releases Echolyn and Suffocating The Bloom. The small success was noticed by major company Sony and with a larger budget the band recorded As The World. The poor sales not only meant that Sony cancelled their contract but it also meant the end of the band. Meanwhile the band had created a huge network of devoted fans all over the world which meant it remained an interesting venture for Cyclops to even release a posthumous album. When The Sweet Turns Sour (a play on the title of the well-known Genesis song) includes demos of unreleased material, material that ended up on album in a different form, and two live tracks from their last show. That’s how you’ll find "Another Day," arranged for various voices and with a different lyric on As The World under the title of "Uncle." At one given point in their short-lived (and recently revivied) career, Echolyn was asked to deliver a song for a Genesis tribute album. They concocted a compeletly different arrangement for "Where The Sour Turns To Sweet," however Sony wouldn’t give them the permission to use it, which meant that that particular recording was banished to the archives. Luckily we can hear it here in all its glory and splendour. "Meaning And The Moment" was originally released on the band’s first, self-titled album, but after signing the contract with Sony it meant that Sony also became the owner of this recording as well. Worldwide only 2000 people have this album [including ye ol' editor - ed.] and they are now the only ones to have that original recording. To meet the demand, you can now listen to an unplugged version that was only done three times in this particular way. As mentioned, the CD also contains two live recordings recorded at the band’s farewell concert. "This Time Alone" became the very last song the boys performed as Echolyn in November ‘95. The cheers at the end have a special meaning for each individual member of the band. For me it’s the umpteenth instance of proof that Sony doesn’t know anything about "real" music at all! Of course, we all know that Echolyn is definitely back, yet this album remains an interesting bonus even if you have just bought yourself a copy of the re-released Suffocating The Bloom album with bonus tracks.
