Reviewed by: Clayton Walnum, February 2001 Tribute bands who play their hero's songs virtually note for note are a lot of fun live. Having a live CD is a good way for the band to make some extra income at their shows, selling the CD as a souvenir. Once the CD gets released commercially, however, the audience changes and so does the way the CD gets listened to. What am I getting at here? It's more than obvious from Fragile's CD Live At The Half Moon that they supply a great night of Yes music. For a commercial release, though, it would have been nice to hear the band take the Yes compositions somewhere new (as they do with their atmospheric version of "Owner Of A Lonely Heart") and maybe even throw in some fully original material. That being said, this is one fun CD for fans of Yes. Fragile performs (for the most part) more than competent versions of Yes classics like "Roundabout," "Yours Is No Disgrace," and "Starship Trooper" -- and even tackles some of the more esoteric stuff like "The Gates of Delirium," "The Revealing Science of God," and "Ritual." The best track on the album, Fragile's performance of "Heart of the Sunrise," often sounds spookily like the real thing, except for Steve Carney's vocals, which will never get mistaken for Jon Anderson's. (That's not a criticism; Carney is a good singer, just different from Anderson.) Moreover, this CD's sound is surprisingly good for a live recording, coming pretty close to studio quality. The mix is clean, with the instruments having lots of presence and separation. This must be what the band sounds like from the front row! All in all, this is a decent tribute album, performed by a skillful group of musicians. Yes fans should consider adding this CD to their collection.
