Reviewed by: Davide Guidone, March 2003 I have read many articles and reviews about Peter Gabriel’s latest creature and they were enthusiastic about the result. I don’t think so. Well, yesterday night I watched his guest appearance at the Sanremo Festival, when Gabriel played "Growing Up" (I’m sorry to say it wasn’t a live performance) so I had the idea to write about Up. I don’t understand why everyone declares that this album came after ten years of waiting. Peter Gabriel published a disc in 2000, called OVO, which is a great work, even if he doesn't sing on all the pieces. However, Up is the follow up to Us, but I believe it has many influences of OVO; I think they’re very similar, perhaps too similar. Up until now, Gabriel has taken a pop approach, but isn’t that refined pop, which he played some years ago? Now I think he ought to make a decision: to play world music, or pop. Instead he continues to release albums that combine these elements, adding a lot of electronic sounds (sometimes even the drums are programmed) and I think it isn’t a good choice. So the final result isn’t convincing and there aren’t original ideas. I suggest to all of you who want to buy a recent PG release, buy OVO, not Up. On the other hand, if you wish to listen to anything new compared with OVO, Up is perfect!
