Reviewed by: Stephanie Sollow, September 2003 This 2001 release is a narratorless documentary put together by interviews with the members of Genesis throughout its existence (including a short bit with Anthony Phillips and John Silver), guest musicians Chester Thompson and Daryl Stuermer, manager Tony Smith, journalists Chris Welch and Alan Hewitt (The Waiting Room fanzine) and others. It also includes the trio of Banks, Rutherford and Collins together in 2000 performing together ("Afterglow," "Follow You, Follow Me." and "No Son Of Mine"). Those looking for lots of lengthy archival clips of classic Genesis period - e.g. when Gabriel fronted the band will be disappointed, though there is a lot of use of classic clips. It is the overview history of the band, but, as the title indicates, its about the music they created, but in that discussion a historical perspective of the dynamics within the band, and why various members left over the years. Those clips include video snippets as well as live footage. Though one gets to the different sections (play, scene selection, discography) textually, once section a video/music box (natch) rotates to selected segment, nice piece of animation that doesn't delay one getting to the content. The bonus features include more interview footage covering Collins' joining the band, Steve Hackett joining the band and Hackett playing "Horizons" (a very nice instrumental guitar piece), as well as items on the writing of "Supper's Ready," The Lamb... (which recycles some interview snippets with Banks), "Firth Of Fifth" and more. I actually found it a very interesting overview of the band's music, and what the band says dispels the myth, though it isn't addressed directly, that Collins set the direction for the band. Much of what resulted was band effort. It provides the connective thread between the "Gabriel-era" and the "Collins-era." It is a DVD that doesn't oversell what's inside. One may find "Follow You, Follow Me" appears a lot, however.
