Reviewed by: Keith "Muzikman" Hannaleck, December 2003 The old grey mare ain’t what he used to be … that is what many folks are saying about Peter Green these days. I agree that he is not the guitar player he once was; however, when you consider the pit of hell he pulled himself out of to come back and play actively again, it puts an entirely different perspective on his abilities. Even though Green is not the lead guitar man that changed the face of blues-rock in the ‘60s, he can still add a lot of color and experience to a band’s sound. We all get old, our skills diminish, and guitar Gods are unfortunately unprotected from mortal attributes, we like to think that they are, but alas, reality smacks us upside the head now and then to bring us back to mother earth to remind us all of our insignificance amongst the grand scheme of things. An Evening With Peter Green Splinter Group In Concert finds Mr. Green and his band in jolly good form in a rousing electric set and an acoustic set that would make any blues aficionado smack their lips. Nigel Watson is the cornerstone of this band; his stinging lead guitar paves the way for his mates to usher in their parts of each composition. Watson’s voice is very strong as well, while Green sounds much more mellowed, almost too much, particularly for the upbeat electric blues tracks. This is Peter Green we are talking about here, and that is somehow enough considering the level of his contributions to music. With plenty of bonus features and concert footage, this is one DVD that should be on your Christmas or Birthday list this year, or better yet just go out and buy it now just because it’s a must have DVD, you be glad you did. This blues-rock comes served up in heaping platefuls and its sweet justice for Peter Green and his longtime fans. Get it while it’s still simmering.
