Reviewed by: Keith "Muzikman" Hannaleck, July 2002 These two former bootlegged concerts are now legitimized by the Hendrix family label Dagger Records. Live In Ottawa (recorded March 19, 1968 at the Capitol Theater) was a big disappointment for me. With the exception of "Tax Free" and "Fire," the sound is terrible on this disc. At one point Jimi tells the crowd that they were having some problems with the sound. That coupled with the fact that it was a bootlegged recording are the reasons that the sound quality is so poor I imagine. Live At The Oakland Coliseum (recorded April 27, 1969) is different story however. The sound quality is very good and it shows The Experience in top form, performing at their peak as a powerful well-oiled musical machine. "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" goes on for over 18 minutes, and it's Hendrix at his jammin' best. That song alone is worth the purchase of the CDs. If you can't get enough of the same songs by Hendrix performing live variations of those songs, you will enjoy the endless flow of music from the archives that has come out in the last several years. My hope is that more of his studio and live material is unearthed; I for one have an appetite for this music that remains unsatisfied.
