Prymary is their debut album and sees a band that draws influences from various genres such as hard rock, pop, metal, prog, jazz, classical, etc. Their music is firmly placed in the prog category and what I would call prog rock/metal. The compositions are usually long and within the songs they touch elements from the genres mentioned above, which quite naturally results in a rather dynamic expression. As far as comparisons go, there are elements of Dream Theater, Rush, Planet X, Enchant, etc. As far as musicianship goes, the band doesn't stand back for anyone. Vocalist Mike DiSarry has a good clean mid-to-high ranged voice, but lacks some power in his tone. With a better production I am sure he will improve.

The songs are all interesting and well executed, but the CD definitely needs a lot of time in the player to be fully appreciated, actually a lot more time than I usually spend getting into a prog record. It was kind of hard to find the melodies at first, but now that I have, this stuff is starting to impress me more. Having that said, I feel the quality throughout the CD is uneven and I would have hoped for more consistent material. The instrumentation is superb, but they need to work on more memorable melody-lines. All songs have elements and themes of grandeur, but the songs aren't always followed through. For example; some parts of a song is just unbelievably good and well written, but then the following theme doesn't cut it or follow in same style or quality. At their best they are brilliant, but at they worst, they are just mediocre.

The production is somewhat muddy and bears evidence of being a self-financed CD. The instruments are rather well balanced, but lacking in the punch and power department.

I find Prymary to be one of the most interesting new Prog bands out there. At this stage in time they only occasionally live up to their true potential, but the musicianship is exceptional and if they focus a bit more on creating more memorable and accessible melody-lines the next CD could be something out of the ordinary. Nevertheless, it's a good CD worth checking out for prog fans, with many brilliant moments. But if you get the chance, you better listen first.
