Jérôme Langlois is one hell of a piano player, and for that alone this is worth its price. Langlois made his mark in progressive music back in the 70s with Maneige, an experimental progressive outfit based in Quebec. Molignak is an all-instrumental disc, using piano as it?s foundation, most often accompanied by violin and clarinet, giving the disc a classical feel. This is not a disc of piano solos, as the songs usually employ a range of instrumentation. It is so refreshing to hear the piano, as much as I love Hammond organ and synths, there is something so pure about the piano, and that comes across in these songs. The haunting combination of clarinet and violin in "L'Envol Du Papillion" is a simple and infectious. A bit of jazz finds its way into "Mars 97," while other moments where drums, bass, and guitars are included ("Jac 23") create a wide spectrum of sound. Langlois has a wonderful sense of melody, making Molignak accessible considering the complexity of the music.
