Trying to explain what Spooky Pie sounds like is like analyzing a psych patient by the name of Sybil, they have so many different personalities you never know which one is going to show up for dinner. That is just fine and dandy with me because I like something out of the ordinary or the off center alternative in music.

If you look at the cover of this CD you will feel you are watching a horror movie, then when you open the CD, the inside cover shows three widows giving their loved ones a shot in the head and an early grave; on the back cover there are three dead men lying in a nice neat row. So what is the moral of the story? Happiness is a warm gun, what else? The CD comes housed in a ? you guessed it, a blood red colored case. Even though they project this Halloween like image they are very seriously talented musicians and let's say that they use a different kind of vocal style that sounds like a punk Go-Go's on speed.

To make this an even cooler joy ride R & B legend Big Jay McNeely joins in to play some smokin' saxophone. The two instrumentals that he guests on will make you think that the songs belong on another album. "Surfin' Iraq" and "Phantom Surfer" rock hard and fast with just enough twang and salty air to remind you of the days when the Southern California beaches were full of tanned teenagers stompin' their feet to great beach music and surfing all day. The other great instrumental is "Doom Buggy." It is another excellent slice of sound without the human vocals stealing the show?did I hear somebody say The Munsters? This is all great fun with a lot of good music to enjoy so do not take any of the images or content seriously. It is all merely a play on our cinematic themes sensationalizing violence and destruction.

They are a very cool band with a distinctive sound and style that is all their own. It would be very difficult to emulate them, and that is what separates them from the hundreds of other indie bands vying for your attention. This one is worth taking the time to check out. Remember the names Phyllis Teene, Will Spectre, Kim Ono, Li'l Tracy, Eddie De Joy, and Mark Fletcher, they are Spooky Pie.
