I just finished watching Dream Theater's latest DVD, Metropolis 2000: Scenes From New York, and I'm not sure what to say. One word keeps coming to the forefront: Spectacular. If you're a Dream Theater fan, you're already familiar with the music. In my opinion, Scenes From A Memory is one of the best progressive metal albums ever recorded and definitely the best thing Dream Theater has ever done. But until you've seen these five guys perform this magnum opus live, you've made only half the journey.

You'd be hard pressed to find five more talented and skilled musicians together on one stage. Watching these prog masters ply their trade is nothing short of astonishing. John Petrucci's guitar positively smokes, John Myung's bass rumbles like an earthquake, James LaBrie's vocal gymnastics reach for the stars, and Jordan Rudess's keyboard wizardy will make you other keyboardists want to give up the ghost. And then there's Mike Portnoy. Watching this pro pound the skins is damn near a religious experience. Put together on this DVD, the boys perform an almost flawless, nearly 90-minute version of Metropolis 2: Scenes From A Memory.

And that's not all. The DVD includes tons of bonus material that you don't get with the VHS version. (Time to pry some green stuff out of your wallet and get that DVD player.) You get another hour's worth of live material, including a 25-minute version of "Change of Seasons." You also get a behind the scenes documentary, audio commentary from Dream Theater that you can listen to along with the concert, and a photo gallery containing pictures from the Dream Theater tour. All in all, over three hours of Dream Theater video coolness. (Geez, this is beginning to sound like one of those late-night TV ads.)

After you watch this DVD, you'll be asking yourself, "Can Dream Theater really be this good live?" Here's your answer: I attended the show Dream Theater performed at the Oakdale in Connecticut, one day before this one was recorded in New York, and, yes, they really are this good.
