Some bands give prospective owners the puppy dog eyes to get them to buy their album. Those particular products come in cute packaging or with bonus material. Then once you get them home, all they do is make a mess of the stereo. While Dogpound is neither a Great Dane or a yippy Pug, it's a respectable specimen that'll allow you to pat its head. In terms of breadth and style, they're a slightly heavier version of Bon Jovi. Whatever the comparison, their music is best classified as Arena Rock.

The first two songs, "My Own Sin" and "Glass Jar" are catchy. With them, you know the housebreaking will go without a sweat. Then, "Born A Winner" is a step-more radio-friendly with the right mix of staccato, singing, and guitar solos. Afterwards, "Human Hologram" is as if Van Halen collaborated with Blue ?yster Cult's cowbell guy (who I've met by the way and he ain't Will Ferrell). Continuing on, "Not Welcome Here" starts with the operatic passage of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody". The unconventional intro leads into a structure similar to Jadis or Frost*. From this point on, they provide various permutations of their proven formula; however, "Other Way Around" deviates from their base. It's like Rage Against The Machine interlaced with Enchant. Beyond that, "In A Life" and "Away From Me" put a number of their niftiest tricks in the same routine. Still, they save one of their best for last. "Undivided" is like Dream Theater's "Metropolis" sung by Ozzy Osbourne, but it also has glossier sides that personify Living Colour or The Third Ending. Subsequently, "You And Me" hints to Rush and "Rain Must Fall" is a balladic farewell reminiscent of Styx.

While this band may be too heavy-handed for some stations and too light for others, it'll appeal to people who just like good music and aren't looking to pigeonhole a band to a certain niche. By no means is this background music. If anything, it's fitting for a house party or a tailgate outside the stadium.

Just like any high-strung Terrier, it won't be compatible with couch potatoes. To give it to you straight, its driving beat is most appropriate for jogs around the block or beer bongs. Then again, I would never advocate serving alcohol to the family pet.
