Think of Bowie in his tech years and the 80's English dance electronica bands with a dash of metal and acoustic with strong ambient tones and you have an brief encapsulation of what Payne's Grey sound is like. I put major emphasis on the word brief though. Each song carries itself very well as an entity in and of itself due to the reflective lyrical content and ever changing mood swings of the music.

So who is this group? They are two men actually, Murdock Scott and Shawn O'Neill. Scott writes and is the lead vocalist, while O'Neill plays guitar and is also a contributing lyricist. They generate their music digitally using Apple Power Macs, which more and more independent artists are doing. Ahh ... the spirit of indie music! The internet and technology help the flame of independence burn brighter than it ever has, and the flame keeps getting higher and hotter.

The patchwork quilt of this musical ecstasy provided by these two gentlemen is bound to make its way into several different sectors of the music buying public's hands because of its diverse appeal technologically and the overall modern application of instrumentation that you will enjoy. I was mainly attracted to Scott's vocal inflections, which are dominating and suit the musical atmosphere very well. This isn't prog-rock as you know it; it's a unique mixture that takes a few pieces of the entire musical puzzle, but the puzzle, which builds on a story, leaves you hanging there wanting for more.

This isn't your typical electronic mix of thoughtless cold and calculating computerized gibberish, it's a group of thoughtful and well composed pieces with many facets of human nature interwoven into the musical scenery. This is music that will speak to your senses.

[This Payne's Grey is not to be confused with the German progressive metal band Payne's Gray who released two albums, one in 1995 and the other in 2000. -ed.]
