The "icing on the cake" comes courtesy of the four-piece Event. Fronted by students from the world known Berkley College of Music their technical skills are all over their splendid debut Electric Skies. What these people are able to come up with here can easily be the "missing link" between Liquid Tension Experiment and Dream Theater. Just listen to that powerful roaring bass and the firework drumming in "Perfect Illusion" and what about the flashing guitar style of Shaun Michaud. Event has what a lot of other bands don't have and that's the insight to add totally different sounds to their obstinate music. Just listen to those unconventional synth-sounds during "Tall Bizarre" and you know immediately what I'm talking about. Classical piano swims in between the traditional rock structure in "Tundra" and in the harmony of "Walk On" I do perceive a young, powerful John Wetton. Even more playful synths in the rough "Aimless" whilst the Petrucci soundalike really shines throughout. "Holdsworth-goes-metal" in "Full Of Stars" where guitar, drums, and bass all go to the limits. It's pity about the rather short songs on this Electric Skies, yet it's sufficient enough material to put this band in the gallery of the greats. In any EVENT we will EVENTually hear much more of this EVENT!

Also released as: Black Cat 500 1619 in 1998; alternate cover show above left -ed.
