Posted on Monday, August 03 @ 03:01:14 UTC by nightowl

Friday night, September 4th, will feature the performance of two great bands at Local 506 in Chapel Hill.

Jaafar: Headliner Jaafar is a band that is difficult to categorize. Fusing elements of progressive rock, world music, jazz, funk, and the music of the Middle East, Jaafar crosses numerous boundaries of the musical spectrum. Led by bassist Robert Troy Cole, the band includes a revolving cast of outstanding veteran world musicians With several releases to their credit, the band's latest album, Dedication To The Sunset, was released in 2008 to much critical acclaim. Jaafar has traveled the world performing in such diverse countries as Egypt, India and Poland, as well as performing at numerous clubs and festivals in the United States. The Jaafar experience will be a great way to kick start ProgDay weekend.

George / Preston / Herrett (GPH): GPH is a relatively new collaboration of three very talented musicians: Dave George, Brian Preston and Darren Herrett. Dave George, an experienced Washington D.C. session player, has been the guitarist in many East Coast bands in the last 20 years with a special love for jazz and improvisation. Past ProgDay attendees may already be familiar with Brian Preston. As bassist with Smokin' Granny, Onomata and Freehand, Brian has performed at previous ProgDay preshows and on the main stage at Storybook Farm. Darren Herrett studied at the Percussion Institute Of Technology. He has played percussion and drums in a variety of musical settings and styles, and is currently an in-demand session drummer across the Carolinas. Together they form George / Preston / Herrett, an instrumental band with roots in rock, jazz and prog, playing music with an emphasis on improvisation and the out-of-the-ordinary.
