Artist News: Ex-Angra, Shaman Vocalist Andre Matos Passes Away

Andre Matos circa 2000It was reported yesterday that André Matos, one time vocalist with Angra and Shaman, passed away on June 8, 2019, the result of a heart attack; he was 47.

Matos is probably best known for fronting Angra, the Brazillian classically-influenced progressive/speed metal band. Their recording debut came with 1993's Angel's Cry, followed by 1996's Holy Land (my personal favourite). A couple of EPs and album later, three-fifths of Angra had left, including Matos.

The trio of Matos, bassist Luis Mariutti, and drummer Ricardo Confessori formed Shaman (with Hugo Mariutti), releasing Ritual in 2002. After a live album and another studio album, Matos left Shaman and embarked on a solo career, releasing his "solo" debut Time To Be Free (along with both Mariutti brothers) in 2007. Mentalize followed in 2009 and The Turn Of The Lights in 2012.

Matos also has made guest appearances, such as with Tobias Sammet's Avantasia project - the first two Metal Opera releases - as well as with Timo Tolkki's shortlived project Symfonia.

In recent years, and months, Matos had reunited with his very first band, Viper, as well as with Shaman. Earlier this year, he guested with Avantasia during that group's Brazilian shows.

As reported by Blabbermouth, fellow Brazilian, guitarist Andreas Kisser (Sepultura), "dedicated his acoustic performance at the Rio Montreux Jazz Festival in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil on Saturday (June 8) to [...] Matos [...]."

Per his wishes, Matos' remains were cremated in the presence of only family.

We here at PW have reviewed both Angra and Shaman releases, which we hereby link to below.
