CD/DVD Releases: Newsbits: John Wetton, Mike Portnoy, Threshold...

So we're back... after a long, unintended hibernation. But, spring has sprung and so we have re-emerged, just in time for our 16th Anniversary.

Nevertheless, lots of news things happened during those chilly winter months. While we cannot catch up on them all, here are some briefer news items from March:

John Wetton guests on the new Renaissance album Grandine il Vento, which is/was due out this month. A sample of the track "Blood Silver Like Moonlight" can be heard here: www.renaissancetouring.com.

Recording on Grandine il Vento was completed before the tragic death of guitarist/composer/vocalist Michael Dunford. The new album was recorded at Studio X in Ridgewood NJ, USA, June - September 2012. The album was produced by band member Rave Tesar, with lead vocalist Annie Haslam co-producing.......

Deep Purple will release Now What?! on April 30 in North America via earMusic. .......

Dutch progressive/technical metallers Textures announced the addition of guitarist Joe Tal to the group's ranks ........

A few months ago, British progressive metallers Threshold kicked off a fan video contest for the song "Staring At The Sun," taken from their latest release March Of Progress. The winner was Achim Bieler from Germany (see the original clip here); he and the band worked together to expand the video, which can be seen here, plus a behind the scenes video has also been posted here .......

The new project featuring Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehan and Richie Kotzen now has a name - The Winery Dogs. Their self-titled debut album is due out in May in Japan, with other release dates tba .....

Not to be confused with the Portnoy, Sheehan, Tony MacAlpine and Derek Sherinian project PSMS who released last month Live In Tokyo, a new CD+DVD recorded Nov 14 at Zepp Tokyo and featuring an all-instrumental set from each of their solo records, previous collaborations, classic instrumental covers and extended solo spots ....

Black Country Communion will commune no more, according to statements made by Glenn Hughes last month concerning Joe Bonamassa's decision to leave the project .......

Avantasia's The Mystery Of Time was released March 30 and features guest appearances by Biff Byford, Joe Lynn Turner, Michael Kiske, Bruce Kulick, Russell Gilbrook, Arjen Lucassen, Ronnie Atkins and Eric Martin, with artwork hand-painted by British fantasy artist Rodney Matthews .......

Rhapsody of Fire will release a new live album, Live - From Chaos To Eternity, on May 3 in Europe, May 7 in the USA, via AFM Records. Recorded on the band's 2012 European tour, it will be available as a 2CD digipak and a limited edition 3LP vinyl set, and features a mix of old classics and newer tracks ........

Iced Earth released Live In Ancient Kourion, their first officially recorded DVD/Blu-Ray, on April 16 (North America, April 15 in Europe), recorded in a 6,000 year old amphitheater. Metal Hammer premiered a track, "I Died For You," here. .......

Doogie White & La Paz will released their second album, The Dark And The Light, May 27 (Europe, June 4, US), through Metal Mind Productions .......

Within Temptation released a covers album on April 19, covering tracks from artists as diverse as Bruno Mars ("Grenade") to Gnarls Barkley ("Crazy") and The Who ("Behind Blue Eyes"); all this the culmination of a WT's collaboration with Q-Music, who broadcast the band playing various covers for the station as lead in to WT 15th Anniversary and a show at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp....

Floor Jansen completed recording the second ReVamp album with Joost Van Den Broek with guests Marcela Bovio (Steam Of Passion) and Daniel De Jongh (Textures); to be released some time in September.....
