With their twelfth album At War With The Mystics, The Flaming Lips create a fun, loud and catchy record. The follow-up to 2002?s Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots; At War With The Mystics has the Flaming Lips charting into some new territory as singer/guitarist Wayne Coyne explains the album on the bands website. Coyne gives some nice insight to the new album's songs on the website, explaining deeper meanings and little running stories in the songs. It is filled with more playful songs as well as many songs of protest, as they are very vocally opposed to, as they put it, "Bushies second term," it makes for a fun album. With very catchy choruses and a funky spacey ambience the album is fairly well-rounded. With songs ranging from the somber and dark, the spacey, to the screaming triumphant, At War With The Mystics covers the Flaming Lips repertoire. Like other Flaming Lips albums, serious and sometimes sad lyrics are matched with triumphant feeling music behind them for a very interesting feel. 'The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song... (With All Your Power)" sets a great tone for the album, building to a explosive climax that could easily having you singing in class. "It Overtakes Me / The Stars Are So Big ... I Am So Small ... Do I Stand A Chance?" is a funky bass and sound effect heavy song that levels off into some calming acoustic guitar to finish. "Mr. Ambulance Driver" which is loosely built around a sample of a siren of an ambulance ends up slowly drowning the siren into the music for in the words of Coyne "a teenage car crash ballad," and after first listen it is the exact feeling of the song. "POMPEII AM GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG" is song with the story about a young couple that are planning their suicide, and it builds wonderfully to a chilling peak. "Goin? On" closes out the album on a note of hope. If you liked Yoshimii then chances are you?ll enjoy At War With The Mystics; and if you aren?t into either, try to catch the spectacle that is a live Flaming Lips show, it may just make you a fan.
