Italian 3-piece Airborn started out in 1995 as a one man band with Alessio Perardi singing and playing almost every instrument himself. Alessio was later joined by bassist Alberto Leschi and in 1998 they found a guitarist in Roberto Capucchio, and this resulted in the demo Born To Fly.

On Born To Fly, Airborn offer a healthy dose of traditional speed/power metal with some classical elements in the vein of Helloween, Gamma Ray, Edguy, etc. This is guitar-dominated, flavoured with some solo guitars on top in the verses bringing even more melody to the songs. The mid-ranged, slightly husky vocals are good. There are even some cool background-choiring by the vocalist during the verses which works out fine and serves a certain effect which makes this a bit different from other bands of this ilk. He has some slight problems reaching the high notes but this guy knows his limits and attempts to avoid them before he overexerts himself. Unfortunately the drums are programmed, which might be a problem for some, but they work out OK for me, as this is only a demo. The bass is not very present but serves its intention. As for the keys, they are more in the background, not always present, but bring a slightly symphonic touch to some of the songs.

I think this album has something for everyone, but fans of above mentioned bands and genres should not be without this CD. Born To Fly has a lot to offer and comes as a breath of fresh air into the power scene! When it comes to quality, the songs are more or less even and although this is nothing new under the sun, this will for sure be appreciated by many power/speed metal fans.

As this is a demo the songs are marked by the limited quality of the sound. This is melodic, catchy and well composed. Although the songs need some final polishing before entering the studio, Airborn will for sure be noticed when they release their full album. Until then, I wait in excitement!
