Inside Out describes them as the new Swedish prog sensation, but to tell you the truth Carptree are no neophytes to the sophisticated music environment. Consisting of Niclas Flinck on vocals and Carl Westholm on keyboards and vocoder, two musicians who have known each other for twenty years now, having participated in other less-known projects, Carptree have reached the coveted third album target, just after the well-conceived Superhero. Which could be the primary reason why the band is now under the wraps of the well-known European label. So it remains to be seen if this new found visibility will launch the dynamic duo amongst the high-profile names of a movement that, after the Dream Theater hurricane, is living a newfound glory, at least in terms of involved musicians. However Carptree seem to possess the necessary ingredients to reach the next step, thanks to some great songs that recall the most intimate Genesis atmospheres (especially from a vocal standpoint, as Niclas sounds a lot like vintage Peter Gabriel on more than one tune), even if the duo amplifies them with precious orchestral pieces and modern sounds. But it's the capacity to cover the songs with this subtle layer of pseudo-modernity (listen to "In The Centre Of An Empty Space," for example) that gives us a good reason to enjoy Carptree more than a lot of their colleagues still too tied-up with the great past.
