Ever since the arrival of Steve Hogarth as a replacement for the charismatic giant of prog, Fish, every single new Marillion album has been food for controversy. Bearing in mind the fact that Hogarth has been a singer with Marillion longer than Heather's boyfriend ever was, each new Marillion album has indeed 'progressed' from their previous encounter. Luckily a lot of you out there in the wild world were pleased with the band's previous Marbles release, whether it was the lavish fan club release or the stripped down 'normal' version. This time produced by Michael Hunter (instead of the familiar Dave Meegan), the band has recorded twenty new songs, ten of which have found their way to this new Somewhere Else disc, the band's 14th studio offering. Apparently the rest of the material will be released in spring 2008 as the band's 15th studio release, which, unlike Somewhere Else, will once again boast a special edition as well.

Strangely enough, the figure 14 on the last page of the CD-booklet is made out of a mourning wreath. Hopefully it isn't a sign for things to come? It looks like producer Michael Hunter added a lot of ideas and sounds whilst the rest of the band had left the Racket Club, so in a way the end result is the combined effort of six souls whose energy is bundled towards one goal: making yet another incredible album. With the catchy "See It Like A Baby" pulled as the first single, Marillion delivers a very contemporary sound, even leaving behind the obvious prog clich?s. Also, the opening track "The Other Half" grabs you by the throat with its ingenious occasional eastern flavours in the background, although it's a little unexpected when the piano kind of takes over in a jazzy way.

Marillion has often proved to be able to write incredible melodies and this time is no exception. The main melody for "Thank You Whoever You Are" is yet again a timeless masterpiece, nicely backed by synthesized strings nicely contrasting with the solitary piano that ends this song. Hogarth's superb vocal range gets backed by a rather repetitive structure during the title track "Somewhere Else," leaning more towards a soundscape until a heavy outburst of distorted guitar and powerful drums introduce a different approach. A similar soundscape-feeling with added storytelling vocals by Hogarth is what you can expect from "A Voice From The Past" which also includes, although short, a nice Rothery guitar solo.

H's voice sounds spacey and full of "flanger" effects during "No Such Thing," which indeed floats on top of the repetitive backing. "The Last Century Of Man" could well be a U2 song, as I can clearly hear Bono's voice throughout. When the acoustic guitar of the final track "Faith" started, it was as if the band would deliver "Blackbird" by The Beatles. In fact "Faith" was written and recorded in 2005 and already performed a couple of times live. In fact, you can find an "unfinished" version of the song on the DVD Before First Light.

Someone said this is not Marillion but the Steve Hogarth Project! For those of you who still regard Script For A Jester's Tear as the ultimate Marillion experience, then for sure you haven't liked any of the recent Marillion stuff at all. If however, like the members of the band themselves, you are open to new things, to progress, then Somewhere Else will bring you once again to a different island. To be honest, we should hear all of the twenty compositions first because, chances are, by choosing a different tracklist for each album, the result might sound different. Marillion has not copied themselves, has not released another set of "marbles," but have not really released a set of strong songs either. Chances are their minds were not in the studio at the time of recording yet ? somewhere else!
