UFOs, Lima, grandmas, and bodies in the lake ? these are some of subjects covered by The Codetalkers on their original and beguiling set of songs offered on their new release. Granted, their writing is a little off center, although they are not any different from any other southern alternative rock styled groups that have been popping up over the years. Their fearless leader, Col. Bruce Hampton, often called a pioneer, inventor, and innovator of their particular brand of music, is quick to dismiss the titles people have attached to him.

The essential ingredient found in their unique brand of southern flavored rock is a sense of humor. While traversing the rock 'n' roll landscape the Col. and his smart new band pump out funky rhythms and beats filled with parts of blues, jazz, country, and whatever else they feel in the mood to set lyrics to. It is a codified mix of roots and jam music motorized by a foundation of rock. If that makes any sense to you then you are certainly not the average listener. The Col. ain't an average dude either, he never has been, and he has a long successful record of accomplishments in spite of of going off the beaten path. This is crusin' with your baby and cut-a-rug music ? get ready for long quite a ride.

I really enjoy music that is original and full of vim and vigor like this. Yup, there is never a dull moment to be had on this CD. You will be bouncing your head around, tapping your feet, laughing, you name it and these tunes will set you in motion without any secret potion. This is the real deal folks, the Col. and his boys do it all with expertise and precision and still keep it simple and uplifting every step of the way. Think of Frank Zappa meets Chet Atkins meets Little Feat and you may have some idea what to expect. It all sounds very attention grabbing to be sure, it is all of that and more. Like the back of the CD says "This CD will change the way you think about the banjo, flying saucers and grandmothers, not to mention Baltimore." Need I say more?
