Magenta - Live At The Point 2007

Year of Release: 2009
Label: Tigermoth Records
Catalog Number: DVDTMROO4
Format: DVD
Total Time: 147:00:00

Recorded at the sadly now defunct The Point venue in Cardiff, this DVD is the latest live document from Magenta, and thankfully has much more of a live feel and atmosphere than the previous live DVD, The Gathering.

Kicking off with the familiar intro track "Opus 3," first up is the single "Speechless," which actually really rocks hard live in its current form. It was also great to hear the seldom-played "Envy" and "Sloth" from the Seven album.

With the passage of time I always feel that the mid section of the set dominated by the Home material affects the dynamics of the set somewhat adversely. But that's just a personal viewpoint, merely because with the exception of "Demons," "Towers Of Hope" and "The Visionary," for me the rest of the songs in this section are good songs, just not favourites of mine. Yet I also understand the reasons behind it, namely to preserve the narrative concept of the Home material.

The set is satisfyingly rounded off with some old favourites such as "Man The Machine," "Genetesis/The Warning" and "White Witch," all from the debut album Revolutions.

The video is exceptionally well filmed, great coverage with lots of roving cameras and some well placed static ones too. It's a very professional effort, with pin-sharp picture and stunning 5.1 sound. It's an exceptionally clear recording too, every instrument can be heard when it needs to be.

You also get some decent extras in the shape of a behind the scenes doc, some tech talk interviews with guitarist Chris Fry talking tuning techniques, and particularly fascinating Martin Rosser explaining his 'virtual guitar' set-up, and the excellent "Speechless" video.

And with yet another line up change (with Kieran Bailey and Colin Edwards replacing Allan Mason-Jones and Martin Rosser on drums and rhythm guitar respectively), and with the recent Metamorphosis album material now being played in the live set, looks like it's time for yet another live DVD, eh guys?
