Blue Universe is the solo project of Sebastian Woscoboinik, a stick player from Argentina. For the most part, the music is atmospheric, almost ambient, in style, with touches of light jazz. Woscoboinik doesn't set out to amaze the listener with his virtuosity, but rather uses the stick to create pulsing patterns, moody backdrops, and gentle melodies.

A couple of compositions almost cross the line into electronica, but for the most part, the music relies as much on ethereal loops, gently picked chordings, and restrained beats as it does on electronic effects. An exception is Woscoboinik's version of the Beatles' "Across the Universe," which starts off pleasantly enough before becoming oddly discordant.

The recording quality is top notch, as is the CD package itself, which is cleverly designed around a set of cards that replace the traditional CD booklet. Graphically, the cards are professional all the way, featuring fascinating images comprised of photos and photographic effects, as well as color drawings. All the liner notes are in Spanish, so English speakers may be left in the dark as to the details of the production and the contributing musicians and instruments.

Woscoboinik's music isn't the sort of thing that jumps out of the speakers to astonish its listeners. Instead, the listener will want to settle into a comfortable couch, turn out the lights, and let the sounds wash over him or her.
