Tanger is an instrumental four piece from Argentina with all music composed by bass player Luis Colucci. Nevertheless, one of the main ingredients on offer here is the flute as played by Damian Lois. Due to the often distorted sound of his brother Ignacio's guitar, the music gets an avant-garde flavour injected. Even more when a certain Fransesco Huici is invited to lend his alto saxophone to two tracks. Here the sound becomes rather dark and brooding. "El Ermitano" is a rather experimental piece that leads itself into jazz territory, making it more fun for the musicians than for the listener. Recorded between May 2000 and June 2002, the sound of the flute that gets close to Ian Anderson's style often clashes with the sound of the guitar, as if it concerns two opposite worlds. Throughout this album the drums sound uninspired, repeating itself time after time. Also the sound of the guitar tends to be the same, which makes this an uninteresting album to listen to. Diversity certainly isn't on the cards here and twelve almost similar tunes is a little too much of a good thing, as you will undoubtedly understand. Luckily in "Chacales." Ignacio Lois switches to acoustic guitar that, together with the nice percussion, delivers an original work after all. As far as I understand, Tanger is a collective of friends who like to spend some time together making music. I guess it was a little too soon for them to record an album, so hopefully they will sit back and listen carefully to their end product and learn enough lessons so that next time things will sound a lot better.
