Reviewed by: Eric Porter, December 2003 Mike Keneally is an incredible musician, and on Wooden Smoke his skills are on display in a more intimate format. Keneally uses mostly acoustic guitar and piano, creating a more mellow effort with great atmosphere. Crisp and clear sound makes it feel like he is right in the room with you. Keneally gets a little help some friends on a few tracks, but basically most of what you hear is all Mike. Showing a little pop side on “2001;" and again the attention to detail with the vocals, they are terrific. “New England” and “Dee ‘n’ A” might be my personal favorites, as the guitar playing just blows me away. “Bags” and “Boom” feature great vocal arrangements. You don’t get as much of the quirkiness of his previous recordings, but this one lays it all out right in front of you, amazing talent and songwriting, Keneally has got it all.
