If you're a King Crimson fan, you need to be aware of a special set of discs being released by Crim's label, Discipline Global Mobile (DGM). These discs, which are basically official bootlegs, are a collection of live performances from just about every era of King Crimson. Originally being sold through a subscription service called The King Crimson Collector's Club, the continued availability of the CDs is now in question, with the service being retooled in some way that will hopefully make the enterprise more worthwhile for both fans and the band.

In any case, all of the discs are currently available from the DGM web site (http://www.disciplineglobalmobile.com/shop/). As far as recording quality goes, the discs vary wildly from performances that sound like they were recorded from the back of a club to some pretty decent recordings. One of my favorites is the #10 disc, entitled Live In Central Park, NYC 07-01-74. This disc documents a performance by one of the strongest KC incarnations, with Bill Bruford, John Wetton, David Cross, and, of course, the incomparable Robert Fripp.

The tracks on this disc are a tour de force of the Larks' Tongues In Aspic-era King Crimson, featuring explosive performances of such classic Crim as "21st Century Schizoid Man," "Starless And Bible Black," "The Talking Drum," and "Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part 2." Every member of the group roars, with Fripp sounding more aggressive than I think I've ever heard before, tossing off shrieking guitar craziness over Wetton's thundering and growling bass lines. Bruford's drumming gives proof to his standing as one of the best prog drummers ever, and Cross's spooky mellotron and vioin add just the right flavor to each of the songs. "The Talking Drum," which is one of the hottest tracks on this release, builds to such an insane frenzy, you almost expect the amps to explode.

This is great live KC and not to be missed. Point your browser immediately to the Discipline Global Mobile Web store and pick up your copy. Don't be afraid to purchase a few others, either. Maybe we can save this set of CDs from extinction.
