Reviewed by: Davide Guidone, March 2005 I would be very glad if Kino will be a real group and not only a side project. What an amazing music they introduce to us! Born from an idea coming out of the mind of the boss of Inside Out, Thomas Waber, who asked John Mitchell to create a group like The Urbane but with more progressive elements, Kino is a group with the same Mitchell on lead guitars and vocals, John Beck (It Bites) on keyboards, Pete Trewavas (Marillion) on bass and Chris Maitland (ex- Porcupine Tree) on drums. With such great musicians it was almost normal to expect a fabulous album, that Picture actually is. A strong melodic approach is the substrate on which the band deliver its wonderful performance, that has influences like The Urbane, Porcupine Tree, Genesis, Marillion as groups, and alternative rock, pop rock and AOR plus a progressive touch as genres. The music is very fresh, modern and catchy even if Mitchell’s voice isn’t astonishing for sure There’s also a Beatles element that the listener doesn’t have to underrate and a great solo performance by John Mitchell on the electric guitar throughout the entire album. There’s also a special edition of this album with a short DVD (approximately 30 minutes long) that shows part of the gig in Cologne filmed at the end of 2004 that includes the first four songs of Picture. A little gem for people who like this great group.
