Reviewed by: Mathieu Chamberland, January 2003 Lacuna Coil is back, presenting us their third full length album, their fifth so far [including EPs]. Let me just say that they have evolved quite a bit since their first self-titled EP. Once qualified as nothing more than another "The Gathering clone," Lacuna Coil have managed to build their own and unique sound over time. Comalies is the obvious next step in their already impressive discography. The sound of this new album is mature, polished, and clean – all that thanks to a great production by Waldemar Sorychta. The song writing may tend to be a little redundant with the music often revolving around a main riff, repeated over and over throughout the song. For me though, I don't really need anything else from Lacuna Coil's music. I like their kind of simplicity – a musical straightforwardness that lets melodies and atmospheres breathe. Cristina Scabbia is equal to the task, delivering yet another strong vocal performance. A major asset this time around, is Andrea Ferro's vocal work, which have improved drastically since their first self-titled EP. As a matter of fact, Comalies is the album that features the highest number of vocal appearances of Ferro. The music of Lacuna Coil can still be described as Gothic metal with, Comalies being filled with dramatic feelings and melancholic atmosphere, depicting a large spectrum of human emotions - from sadness to joy. Lacuna Coil has become a strong band that can't be considered as yet another carbon copy of major gothic band anymore. They are a unique entity and I sincerely hope that they will continue to release solid albums like Comalies.
