Reviewed by: Jan-Mikael Erakare, January 2006 Evaluation: New wave get-ups notwithstanding, Liquid Scarlet offer up sardonic lyrics delivered with prog-rock pomp and splendor, encapsulating their 3 decade-long list of influences in succinct musical statements… Analysis: These young Swedes have really managed to absorb the most compelling aspects of 70s prog (Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd, elements of the Canterbury sound, and countless other stalwarts) and regurgitate them in an astonishingly unique sound. Despite the use of English as a 2nd language, the lyrics are thoughtful, humorous, and most importantly, warrant repeat reading... Vocalist Markus Fagervall reminds me of Roger Waters but more often of Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode) ... this is not a pejorative.... The production is clean and full, and the attention to tone is laudable. It’s refreshing to hear music that is adequately (as opposed to over) produced! Rating: 4.5-/5 (the minus is for the instrumental track ... I emphatically advocate leaving skronking to bands that can do it...) Summary: Interesting combinations of sounds, excellent use of dynamics and, most importantly, engaging song-writing combined with superb vocals, establishes Liquid Scarlet as a heavyweight contender. Go get this one.
