With their fifth release, Magellan signed up with German prog label Inside Out and published Impossible Figures

This album contains nine pieces and only one long song, "Killer Of Hope," as opposed to their previous one, Hundred Year Flood, where there were only three tracks.

This record, in my opinion, has all the negative characteristics that every Magellan album can have. It depends on the same influences as always, in particular from EL&P of the Black Moon era. In fact the production demonstrates that Trent Gardner's taste is the same as Emerson’s. Plus, the melodies aren’t immediately catchy, the voice has become awful, the arrangements are too bombastic and so on.

I believe that the best side of the album is the work by Wayne Gardner: high guitar riffs and bass phrases are very good and give that metal sound that can be reputed as the innovative point of the album. It’s a pity that he appears not as much as his brother on this disc. Another good comment that one can make is that there is a more modern sound that you can appreciate on this release. But there are irritant pieces like "Bach 16" that one can only consider as being self- demonstrative – of being showy.

To make a long story short, maybe Metal fans could love this album, more than the prog ones, even if the Emerson style works, listeners could like it. But all depends on the taste of the single person. This is the album that you can love and hate because of the same reasons.

Rating: 2.5/5
