Evaluation:

Note to bands: if you send your disc to be reviewed, send the actual artwork if you have it … don't send a photocopy of the thumbnails from your website … if you want a review then present your work as you would like it to be perceived … if you send poorly printed cheap-looking packages along with a CDR and expect to impress, your work will be in vain….

Analysis:

Hardcore ranting over industrial-tinged riffing … Meshuggah-lite if you will … right down to the lead guitar tones, this is a shadow of what is truly innovative and heavy. Each piece careens into the next, cutting a swathe to be sure but only by sheer, blundering force of will.

"Sea Of Skin" deserves a mention for providing minor respite from the blatant Meshuggah-worship through its creative use of cleaner, sparser guitar textures and vocal effects (although the break is fleeting). Overall the musicianship is top notch.

Rating:

3.5+/5 (the plus is for the bass … very well recorded and present ... often in this style of music the bass is felt rather than heard)

Summary:

Mater Machina lacks an identity of its own, creating nothing new, preferring to recycle instead…
