There's only a bunch of bands today that can walk heads up and firmly claim that what they play represents a unique brand of prog style, always evolving into something new. Well, excuse the arrogance, but Pain Of Salvation are the name at the top of this elite list, and this is true even more so after the release of their new album entitled Remedy Lane, the fourth seal of a career that's rapidly taking off into the stratosphere of the prog universe. ...And to think that this time I thought I knew what to expect from the Swedish outfit, considering that The Perfect Element - Part I, an outrageous prog album that mingled together the craziness of vintage Faith No More with complex heavy riffs, had to be completed. But something in the band's plans soon went awry, as Daniel (Gildenlow, the main composer of the group) last summer faced excruciating sentimental problems with his wife, problems that inevitably led to some changes in the upcoming recording sessions. So the second chapter of the perfect element was abruptly postponed, while Daniel began to unleash all his frustration in 13 new songs, the same that comprise Remedy Lane. Well, believe it or not, in the end it seems that, amongst soft melancholic moments (like "Second Love") and other furious pieces (listen to the spectacular "A Trace Of Blood", for example), the internal catharsis has been greatly accomplished, setting free a variety of emotions and atmospheres so ample that it is impossible to describe them only with words. You just have to listen carefully to Remedy Lane, a masterpiece so packed of surprises that it's easy to label the CD another great step on the path that leads to the resurgence of the progressive movement.
