Reviewed by: Davide Guidone, March 2003 If we consider Per Un Amico and Photos Of Ghosts as two different albums, L’isola Di Niente is the fourth album of the Italian band PFM. Maybe the best known outside of Italy. L’IsolA Di Niente is also the first PFM release I bought in 1995. And it was a great start. In fact, this record, which was published in the Anglo-Saxon market as The World Became The World with Pete Sinfield’s texts (Sinfield also worked with King Crimson and EL&P), reaches that maturity which the band hadn’t before. There are more complex and longer songs and the sound is more convincing. To explain what I just said, "L’Isola Di Niente" is PFM longest piece ever and it contains a lot of themes, rhythmic changes and a church choir at the start. This disc sees also the first appearance of Patrick Djivas on the bass, replacing “Fico” Piazza. Djivas, who previously played in another Italian prog group, Area, is an excellent performer and has is more oriented toward fusion (speaking of his style). He reminded me a lot of Jaco Pastorius, the great bass player from Weather Report who died some years ago. This work makes us understand how much the group was interested in the stronger market, if you note there is a song only written in English, like "Is My Face On Straight." However, this release is a step ahead, making a contrast with the previous ones: there aren’t that many influences of some of the English bands (King Crimson, Jethro Tull) that we can hear in the past records. This a completely PFM disc, and one of the best. In my opinion, it’s a five star rating.
