Quick Takes

Quick thoughts on CDs I've (Steph) been playing, to be reviewed in a future update (all over the next few weeks) ... updated July 23, 2006

  • Age Of Nemesis - Psychogeist (this is the Hungarian band formerly known as Nemesis, now signed to Magna Carta) - prog metal with a Dream Theater flavor.
  • Brother Ape - On The Other Side
  • Doppler, Inc. - Nu Instrumetal - jazz fusion
  • Galleon - Mind Over Matter
  • Glass Hammer - Inconsolable Secret
  • Hackett, Steve and the Underworld Orchestra - Metamorpheus
  • Tony Levin - Resonator
  • Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor
  • Niacin - Organik - more Hammond based fusion
  • Ozric Tentacles - The Floor's Too Far Away
  • Presto Ballet - Peace Among The Ruins - melodic metal, somewhat proggy in Dream Theater-esque mode
  • Under The Sun - Schematism - On Stage With Under The Sun - a live release from their NEARfest performance, given a "on the stage" pov

You can see, I was trying to get ready for NEARfest and CalProg... among others...

Not newer releases, but they have been in and out of the rotation...

  • Arena - Contagion - dipped back to this in prep for last April's ROSFest... I like a lot...
  • Edguy - Mandrake - more appealing to me than the EP that preceded their latest...
  • Marillion - Brave - 90s-00's Marillion near masterpiece, haunting, hard-edged, subtle, all the best aspects of Marillion...
  • Litto Nebia - El Vendedor... - 70s release with a soft-rock, jazz progressive feel for the most part - think Ambrosia, only sung in Spanish...
  • Avantasia - Metal Opera (I & II) - yes, it's several years old now... epic power metal from Edguy vocalist Tobias Sammet...
  • Melbourne - Night Star - expected pop... it is... kinda arty though with female vox...

Since folks are inquiring - and rightly so - "when are you going to review my CD?"... here's what's waiting in the immediate wings (in no particular order) -- and right now I am focusing on 2005 releases (and 2006)... and you'll also see a theme here... *

  • Ticonderoga - The Helling-Levine LP (will the 2nd better the first?)
  • DarXtar - We Came To Late
  • Sympozion - Kundabuffer
  • Dice - Without Vs. Within Pt. 1
  • Dimmu Borgir - Stormblåst (yeh, more black/death/extreme metal)
  • Seismic Cry - The Hopeless Flare
  • Bryant, Gary Paul - Imaginary Piano
  • Brainstorm - Liquid Monster
  • Magellan - Symphony For A Misanthrope
  • Allen, Russell - Atomic Soul

That's the plan for the next several weeks...

* if it came out before then, don't fret, I will review it... I promise. :-)
