Reviewed by: Marcel Haster, September 2005 I have missed the first demo of this gothic metal formation, but unfortunately their second demo, Strain Of Souls, did not leave a lasting impression. Now the band presents their third release, this time under the heading "mini cd." If I start with the packaging, it looks really good. Great artwork, a lot more professional than printing covers yourself. So, I’d say this is a good start. Musically Depth Of Illusions also made a better impression on me. A much better production, so pleasant to listen to. OK, they are in the gothic metal corner, so mainly high, soprano vocals. Fortunately Marlojein Hüskens is a good singer, so that is covered. At times I do find her a bit reminiscent of Helena Iren Michaelsen (Imperia, Angel). The music is worked out well. Good, tight compositions and the gents get enough room to play their parts. For a change a bass solo, instead of the ever standard guitar solo, in "As Heaven Blessed A Dying Rose." This is what makes the music great. But still it is fairly standard work. Also the grunts are, again, done good, but not earthshaking. With almost 16 and a half minute, the playing time is rather short. And that is a pity, because even though the music is not world changing or groundbreaking, I have found I like listening to this album. Hopefully this band will soon get the chance to record a full length album, because they deserve it! All in all, Depth of Illusions is a fine mini cd.
