Reviewed by: Davide Guidone, May 2003 The CD I have in my hands is the original edition of Wounded Land released by GEP, it isn’t the special version InsideOut published last year. This album is the first release by the English progressive–metal band, Threshold. It was a surprise for me; in fact, I didn’t expect so much from this work. If I’m not wrong, Threshold is one of the very few bands that has in the lineup two guitarists, Karl Groom and Nick Midson. Configured this way, sometimes the sound is very hard and more oriented toward metal than progressive, but there are many melodies and atmospheres that put the music in the prog sphere. One of two particular elements of this group is the keyboard style, which is very versatile. It goes from Arabic melodies, like in the first track, to epic atmospheres to ambient sounds, and toward properly progressive ones. The second element is the bass, which is more represented than in the other metal-prog bands, so there are many interesting bass lines. Moreover, the presence of Damien Wilson adds that quality that makes this release very good: his clear and powerful voice is perfect for this music. This characteristic permits the band to also play some ballads, like the final track, "Keep It Mine."
