Terse, deliberately scanty, like its red cover ... this acoustic live album from Ray Wilson, the singer who was last stationed behind the microphone of notorious prog band Genesis in their last studio epitaph, the fine Calling All Stations, represents bright evidence of how much one voice, a guitar and a lot of passion can still be appealing . Ray is clever to open this vibrant show with a fully established song like the sweet "In The Air tonight" (written by another great songwriter, Phil Collins), before delighting the audience with an acoustic version of "Inside," the single with which he became well-known alongside his first band Stiltskin. But the magic of this essential and, at the same time, proficient record doesn't abruptly disappear after just a few minutes. Thanks mainly to the classic high-quality "rocker" voice that Ray possesses, all the tracks turn out to be great, and I like to recommend in particular the tearful "Sarah," the notorious "Biko" (written a long time ago by prog mastermind Peter Gabriel), the clamorous "Lovers Leap" (from early Genesis' "Supper's Ready", Foxtrot), or otherwise the relatively unknown "Gypsy," a song which fully shows the talent of a musician who has been shelved in the underground scene almost too quickly. However there is still time to regain a glorious spot in today's landscape, and who knows, maybe from this valuable performance played at the Edinburgh Festival Ray will resurrect his career. And please note that mine is first of all a good omen, but also a hope, because it would mean that "real" music is once again among the newspapers' headlines and radio frequencies!
