Reviewed by: John "BoBo" Bollenberg, March 2005 In 2003 Classic Pictures released YesSpeak as a double DVD set in a slipcase. It contained no less than 190 minutes worth of material, whilst as an extra, the entire live set was included in dynamic Dolby 5.1 and Dolby Stereo. One year later the same company released the Yes Acoustic DVD. Another year later and the material from both discs gets combined and released onto one single disc. Labelled as the "35th Anniversary Edition," the set comes in a newly designed package by Roger Dean. The outer slipcase is in full colour whilst the inlay for the actual DVD case comes as a monochrome design. When I say "all" the material from both previous releases are included, I’m lying. All of the stuff from the Yes Acoustic DVD is there but, instead of the lengthy version of the YesSpeak 2DVD, the company this time has opted to include the cinema version. Compared to the first DVD release, we go from a duration of around 190 minutes down to 75 minutes. On 26th January 2004 in a simultaneous live satellite transmission from a studio in Los Angeles to cinemas throughout the USA, a 75 minute version of the film YesSpeak was premiered. So it is that particular version instead of the previously released "complete" version that is on offer here. Roger Daltrey still is our narrator, whilst all the funny bits are well and truly in place. Wakeman still is the joker of the lot, keeping all of the material nicely together. So for the Yes fan who already owns both DVDs as mentioned, this "new" release doesn’t offer anything extra. However if you look at the film version of YesSpeak as being something different then yes this release does offer something new and interesting as it makes the cinema version available for the very first time. You also still get the "unseen footage" with commentary from Rick plus all of the US trailers are also present. For the review of the included material I suggest you read the respective reviews of the separate releases elsewhere on this website. All you have to remember of course is that the material from the YesSpeak movie contains far less material than on the complete package. The tracklisting below indicates what’s on this new disc so when you compare it with the other review you immediately know what’s missing. For those of you who still would like the complete two disc version of YesSpeak, the good news is that it is still available! For those who are pleased with a mere selection of this combined with the acoustic session then no doubt this disc is for you!
