CD/DVD Releases: Gorgoroth's 2004 Poland Show To Be Released June 2008

Posted on Saturday, March 15 @ 22:45:00 UTC by nightowl

This is the follow up to two news items we posted way back in 2004 regarding a show Gorgoroth played in Poland. Aside from mentioning that the Black Mass Krak?w 2004 DVD will be out from Metal Mind on June 9 (June 10 in the US), I'll start this item using the "wayback machine"...

On Feb 23, 2004 I (Steph) wrote: "Gorgoroth are planning a live DVD for release next year to be recorded in Krakow, Poland this month? The band says it will include 'lots of pyro, gallons of blood, live crucifixion, nude models used and abused in the name of Satan.' (Not likely things you'd find at a Yes concert, now would you? And certainly not the most PC of activities, either)."

The next issue, Feb 29, 2004, we followed up with: "Last issue we mentioned that Gorgoroth would be filming their Krakow show ? well, as you might have expected from what they had planned, things didn't go 100% smoothly. Reads the press release:

Before the show started the stage was covered. After the curtain came down the following could be seen: Four crucified and naked models (two women + two men), spilled with sheep blood, were built up on the stage. The musicians did their show in front of that setting and to complete the spectacle the band was surrounded by more than 100 sheep heads and a lot of sheep blood on stage! A few minutes after the musical inferno started one of the female models fainted and had to be taken down from the cross. Apart from that the show passed as planned. But as soon as the gig was over, the police appeared and confiscated all the recordings from Krzemionki TV.

That's what one of the chairman of the TV station said regarding the show: 'After analysing the material realized for an external producer we decided to report to the Police that there is a possibility that peoples' religious feelings could have been offended,' said managing director of Krakow's TV station, Andrzej Jeziorek.

Tomasz Dziubi?ski from Metal Mind Production (the DVD should have been released through MMP) express: 'Artists use different means of expression ? and the organizer usually has got nothing to do with it. This kind of concerts have got the concrete audience ? not accidental viewers. If someone felt offended we will apologize to him. We did not mean to offend anyone!'

The band was mentioned in Gazeta (see image above), one of Poland's biggest newspapers; needless to say, it looks like that DVD is now in question.

Fastforward to 2008 and Metal Mind's current press release: The infamous Gorgoroth's gig in Krakow, Poland (1st February 2004) finally will see the light of day! Metal Mind Productions will release first ever Gorgoroth DVD entitled Black Mass Krak?w 2004 with their spectacular show on 9th June in Europe and 10th June in US.

Gorgoroth, Norwegian black metal band, drew the attention of the international media in early 2004 after their show in Krakow. They were accused of "offending religious feelings" during the gig, as well as suspected of breaching Polish law concerning the protection of animal rights by using severed and impaled heads of sheep as part of their stage design. The controversial concert in Poland resulted in the group being investigated for the possible breach of Article 196 of Polish penal code concerning offense of religious feelings (the maximum penalty for breaching this article is five years in prison).

Gorgoroth, widely known for their antichristian ideology, had promised on their web site that the Polish concert would be an "amazing show with lots of pyro, gallons of blood, live crucifixion and nude models." Despite the fact, the employees of the Krakow branch of TVP claimed that they had no knowledge of what the musicians and the promoters had in mind until they saw the actual performance. The concert, which was recorded at the studio of a TV station in Krakow, "was never meant to reach the media," according to the band's vocalist Gaahl. "Producers Metal Mind Productions bought the sheep heads at a butcher shop. We weren't involved in animal torture of any kind."

In one of the band's first interviews after this controversial concert, Infernus said to Unrestrained! Magazine (Canada): "We didn't plan to really have an outcome like that, our only intent was to go there and film the DVD (...) All the chaos and media reaction that came from this was a surprise of sorts." Asked if they "were (...) worried when the authorities were called" Infernus answered: "Not worried, really. I mean, what was the worst thing they could do? Destroy the tapes? I don't think they would do that and I don't think they could really do any harm to us, though they might be able to put the Polish producer away in prison for a few years. For us, this will probably help us sell a few more records.(?) As of now, I can only think that the DVD will be put out eventually. (?) It would be almost like they are stuck in the Middle Ages in Poland if they destroyed the tapes by burning them. I hope to get them back one day? I hope."

Apparently, Infernus was right as the show will be eventually available world-wide in mid June 2008. The DVD entitled Black Mass Krak?w 2004 will have Krakow's show as the main feature. Additionally, it will include bonus video material - Live at With Full Force Festival, Leipzig, 2000 (tracks: 1. Destroyer, 2.
