Rory Ridley-Duff, founder of English rock band Protos (One Day A New Horizon), has released two new CDs on-line on his own independant label. The first is Passing Decades containing 55 minutes of progressive rock. You can try before you buy at www.roryridleyduff.com/music.htm.

One Day A New Horizon is one of the most sought after independant records around. It usually swaps hands in record collector circles for around ?250 ($400). Rory Ridley-Duff, one of the bands founders, recorded the album with Steve Anscombe (Guitars) and Neil Goldsmith (Drums) before leaving to specialise in composition/orchestration at Royal Hollow College, London University. These reworked compositions were recorded after Rory left university. The first CD is Passing Decades a compilation of progressive rock music. It features solo rock tracks as well as previoulsy unreleased tracks for bands Protos and Danzante. These stand alongside two Protos favourites "Hunting Extremely Largely Animals" and "The Maiden."

The highlight, for me, is a rock symphonic track called "Space." This evokes memories of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" (Pink Floyd), the quieter parts of "Awaken" (Yes) and Vangelis. Notes from the website indicate that "Space" was more than an attempt to depict life outside this world: it was also a statement about how music can be written. There is no need to be flash to produce good music: a simple melody or subtle harmonic change can be as spine chilling as a rip roaring guitar solo. This is an accomplished work from a mature composer, arranger and performer. Sample and enjoy @ http://www.roryridleyduff.com.
