In the heyday of prog, 33 minutes could make up an entire album. King Crimson's latest Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With is sold as an EP at a discount price, as a sampler for the soon to be released Power To Believe.

The opening "Bude" is basically Adrian Belew's voice synthesized (done on about 4 other tracks as well), before slamming into the heavy riffing metallic edge of the title track. Completely shifting gears again, "Mie Gakure" opens with more synthesized vocals and melds into a Fripp atmospheric soundscape. "Eyes Wide Open" is a warm acoustic piece, showing that this band is open to just about anything when it comes to making music. Diversity is the name of the game. "Shoganai" is a percussion based instrumental and is very musical. "Potato Pie" has a bluesy feel, and again the "Larks Tongues" are dragged out, this time as "(Part IV)", in its heavy glory. The final track "Clouds" is a montage of sound and snips of songs, with a nice tip of the hat to "In The Court Of The Crimson King."

The cover art again features the work of PJ Crook, who over the last few years has been featured on most of the bands releases.

As big a fan as I am of Levin and Bruford, I can't say that I honestly miss their presence here. The band sounds fine in this form to me. I can always count on a King Crimson record to give me something challenging, and yet ultimately rewarding to listen to, and this EP is no exception.
