It often strikes me how close the subgenre "Gothic rock" gets to pure symphonic rock. Even the concrete sound of Dimmu Borgir sometimes holds enough surprises to be of interest to readers of this site. Exchange the loud guitars with the acoustic simplicity and you get Arise From Thorns, a band that combines ethereal singing with fine guitar playing and soft orchestral passages. The power that is embedded in the vocals is extra emphasized by the rhythmic tensions that has the guitar as starting point. The band, which in the meantime has changed its name to Brave, occupies a similar spot as do bands such as Lacuna Coil and October Project, whilst hints of Renaissance, Quidam and even Wishing Tree can be noticed. Personally I'd like the keyboards to be more prominent in order to deliver a much thicker symphonic sound on top of this intimate music. Nevertheless a very promising release by a band I could certainly place shoulder to shoulder with Persephone's Dream, another dark American jewel!
