About a year or so ago the unknown (to me) Julien Ash sent me his CDs Clean and Allegro Vivace under the pseudonym of NLC which stands for Nouvelles Lectures Cosmopolites. The ever-productive Ash has already some new material out, of which Le Domaine is the most conceptual. By means of samples, tapes, analogue synths and percussion, Ash tries to evoke a peaceful, often-minimal music that I'm sure will please the many fans of Wim Mertens. NLC sometimes evolves from industrial chaos, created by means of unconventional percussion, towards neo-classical music in the vein of Michael Nyman. Call it a new wave of chamber music through which you can clearly hear influences from Debussy and you immediately know that this kind of music is ideal for ballet and theatre. Especially those parts where piano and cello complement each other are of enormous high quality. I should also stress the clear production of this album, something that amazes me time and time again with each NLC release.
